The importance of a sleep routine in babyhood
Sleep is essential for healthy life and harmonious development. What can you do if your baby will not drift off and nothing seems to work?
For most new parents the biggest challenge is helping their little one sleep well and for as long as they need. Which methods actually help, and why do so many babies struggle to fall asleep on their own?
How much sleep does a baby need?
Newborns and young infants sleep a total of 13–18 hours a day, but they wake frequently to feed. Their tiny tummies cannot hold much milk. Breastfed babies typically feed every 2–3 hours, and bottle-fed babies every 3–4 hours.
Average total sleep by age:
-
0 to 2 months: 16 to 18 hours per day
-
2 to 4 months: 14 to 16 hours per day
-
4 to 6 months: 14 to 15 hours per day
-
6 to 12 months: about 14 hours per day
At first babies do not distinguish day and night. As your baby grows, night-time stretches lengthen and daytime naps shorten. The shift usually starts around 2 to 3 months, when daytime sleep may reduce to 4 to 5 hours.
Why do newborns seem “restless”?
“Sleeping like a baby” is a myth. Grunts, wriggles and noisy breathing are common. This is usually normal and simply means their sleep pattern isn’t settled yet.
Simple ways to build a soothing bedtime routine
1) Lullabies
Soft, slow singing reduces stress and helps babies nod off. Your voice is the most calming sound, even if you’re not a great singer.
2) Gentle rocking
Rocking can soothe in the first 3–4 months, but keep movements slow and avoid relying on it as the only way to fall asleep, it’s harder to change later.

3) A calm feed before bed
A relaxed feed can set up the night nicely. Evening breastmilk naturally supports melatonin production, which helps regulate the body clock and sleep.
4) White noise
Consistent, low-volume white noise masks sudden household sounds and can promote drowsiness. Use a safe device outside the cot; keep volume low.
5) Keep the room cool and comfy

Aim for 18–22 °C with season-appropriate clothing. A soft, breathable toddler sleep bag plus comfortable sleepsuit is ideal once babies start wriggling and kicking off blankets.
