Would you choose a sleepsuit or a two piece pyjama for your child at bedtime

You will hear very different answers to this question. That is because mums decide based on several factors. There are personal experiences and needs. Fashion also plays a role, along with trends that many people follow.

Sometimes it is hard to resist a lovely piece, and sometimes the child chooses. Sleepwear may also arrive as a gift.
Rather than taking sides, we have gathered points that help you weigh things up so you can find the right garment for your child.

Some mums use two piece pyjamas almost from birth because they feel it is more convenient at nappy changes when only the bottoms need to come off. They often dress their little one similarly during the day too.
Sleepsuits and all in ones are also popular, and many parents use them for as long as they can find the right size. Others switch to pyjamas because they can no longer find larger sizes of one piece sleepwear for an older child.

Each option has its advantages. Every child will end up in pyjamas sooner or later, but since there are no strict rules or recommendations, the main thing is to consider their needs first. What feels comfortable for them. What do they like. What would they happily wear.

Why is a sleepsuit good for the night

A baby sleeps in their cot wearing a sleepsuit

It is one of the most comfortable garments for a baby. It keeps them warm even if a little one or an older toddler kicks off the covers. Their lower back is not exposed, so there is no chill. It supports the nappy well so it does not shift or slip down, which could otherwise lead to leaks at night. And these pieces look very cute on little ones.

The neckline follows a child’s shape, neither tight nor too loose. There are no unnecessary details or stitched decorations that could be uncomfortable. The cut is simple.

If you choose a footed all in one, you will not have to worry about socks being kicked off in the night or pulled off on purpose. Familiar situation, right. You can sleep more peacefully without worrying that their feet or waist will get cold.
Older children can kick off the blanket at night if they want, they will not shiver.

Choose a practical piece

Easy in the dark

If you want a sleepsuit that is easy to manage in the dark, choose a zip instead of poppers. One smooth motion and you can get back to sleep. You will not discover in the morning that you fastened it wonkily.

Look for a small fabric guard at the top of the zip by the neck. This prevents skin from getting caught accidentally. It also stops the zip from pressing on the neck while your child sleeps.

Make sure the all in one is stretchy

Little ones feel most at ease in a sleepsuit or all in one that has enough stretch and does not feel tight when they wriggle and roll. If it also has a slimmer, streamlined cut, like LiaaBébé sleepsuits, your baby will not get stuck with knees pulled up and be unable to stretch out again. That can happen with baggy or very tight cuts and is unpleasant for a young baby. A stretchy, closer fit prevents this.

Good heat retention matters

We love sleepsuits because although they are pleasantly light, they hold warmth well, so there is no problem if a baby kicks off the blanket. Thanks to bamboo fibre, they feel cooling in summer and warming in winter. Their moisture wicking helps prevent sweaty little bodies.

What are the advantages of pyjamas

Some children show an interest in pyjamas. At a certain age they prefer this kind of nightwear. It feels more grown up, and others in their peer group may be wearing the same.

Some parents prefer dressing in pyjamas, even from birth. They find nappy changes easier when only the trousers come off and the top stays on. These are entirely personal preferences, and every solution is fine as long as the clothes are comfy for the child and keep them properly warm.

This works best if the child’s lower back is not exposed in pyjamas. A thoughtful cut helps here too. LiaaBébé pyjamas are made with a higher waistband and longer top to prevent chilly gaps at the waist. They are made from the same quality bamboo fibre blend as our sleepsuits and other babywear. They do not shrink in the wash or ride up at the waist, so children can wear them for a long time.

When is it worth switching from a sleepsuit to pyjamas

When you feel that pyjamas would be more convenient for you in some way. In that case choose a set with a waistband that is not tight and legs that sit well at the ankles. It is important that your child’s lower back is not exposed and that the top does not ride up, even when you lift them out of the cot.

If you would like to stick with a one piece for now

Go for it. We have thought about older children as well. You do not have to give up sleepsuits just because your child is 2 or 3 years old. They can still wear them, as they are among the most comfortable sleep garments for children. With us you can find suitable pieces up to size 110, so roughly ages 4 to 5, in beautiful cheerful colours from plain to patterned, with options that suit both girls and boys.

As they grow, children enjoy choosing colours and prints. Red, French blue, marigold yellow, pink, green, turquoise, plain or patterned. What is the favourite at your house right now.

Babies react sensitively to their environment during sleep too

The baby sleeps calmly and deeply

Clothing is part of that environment. If it is comfortable, allows full freedom of movement when they turn, does not make them sweaty and does not leave them chilly, you can look forward to a peaceful night.
If you want sleep to be restful, consider these extra points when choosing their nightwear:

  • soft and light fabric
  • keeps its durability and softness after washing
  • does not stretch out with use

If a fabric hardens over time in the wash, it can irritate sensitive skin. If a little garment stretches out, moving in it becomes uncomfortable. It is worth weighing things up before you choose sleepwear and looking for good quality.

We hope this has brought you a step closer to making your choice.
