What should we dress our child in for sleep in a 23 degree room?
We always want our baby to be healthy, cheerful and well rested. That means providing quality sleep that soothes them and helps them wake with a smile.
Good sleep matters not only for a happy mood but also for healthy development. It is worth putting sleep set up high on the priority list, from the evening wind down to creating the right environment.

One key factor is what your child wears to bed. To decide well, look at the conditions you already have and the ones you can adjust if needed.
What is the room temperature? Where does it sit through the night, and does it cool towards morning? How old is your child (newborn, infant or a few years old)? Are they more prone to feeling cold, or do they warm up quickly?
To make planning easier and to enjoy picturing the cute outfits, we share specific ideas from LiaaBébé’s beautiful range at the end. We also explain why bamboo fibre babywear is such a good choice.
Is 23 degrees an appropriate room temperature
The optimal range for sleep for infants (and for adults too) is 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. Being one degree above that is not a problem. It happens in summer, and there can be natural fluctuations at home.
For newborns or premature babies, raise the temperature to 22 to 24 degrees. They cannot yet regulate their body temperature well and cannot easily balance external effects.
Always measure the temperature in the room where baby sleeps, as readings differ around the home. You will get the most accurate value by measuring by the cot.
Dressing newborns for sleep

To avoid cooling down, overheating or even a fever, dress them thoughtfully. As a rule of thumb, add one light extra layer compared with what you would put on a baby a few months old.
We also suggest checking now and then at the back of the neck for sweat or small heat rashes, which signal that baby is too warm. You can also feel if the skin is cool. If it is, baby is cold.
With these quick checks, you keep baby safe and comfy and can adjust quickly when needed.
What if the evening’s 23 degrees cools by morning
When daytime temperatures are high and the room cools sharply by dawn, try to keep the night time change smaller. Before bedtime, air the room and let it cool a little, so the morning drop is less dramatic. You can also prepare an extra layer for the night, for example a sleeping bag to pop on after a feed or nappy change.
Night time temperature shifts can also happen in autumn and spring when heating is off and outdoor weather fluctuates widely.
What LiaaBébé babywear do we recommend for 23 degrees
We have a full article on what a baby should sleep in. We recommend reading it for core principles that help you decide in any situation.
Now the fun bit. Here are example outfits for sleeping in a 23 degree room, with pieces from LiaaBébé. If you enjoy visualising cute baby clothes, you can check our suggestions straight away.
For a 23 degree room, LiaaBébé suggests bodysuit and sleeping bag, or with one extra layer for a newborn, bodysuit and sleepsuit plus a sleeping bag.
Comfy bodysuit next to the nappy
Choose a short or long sleeve bodysuit in cheerful colours and cute prints, made from extra stretchy bamboo fibre. These pieces are close fitting yet keep their shape, colour and softness wash after wash. Even babies love the bright colours and tasteful patterns. Bodysuits are available up to size 98.
Sleepsuit for easy wriggling and rolling
Sleepsuits are especially comfortable and are excellent for sleep. Click through to see the distinctive colours. French blue and marigold yellow are favourites, and chilli red is beautiful too.
All our sleepsuits fasten with a zip, which makes dressing quick. This helps in the dim light at night or with a busy little one. Sleepsuits are available up to size 110.
Sleeping bag for cosy warmth
A sleeping bag is a great alternative to a blanket. Baby cannot kick it off and cannot pull it over their face. The neckline sits close to baby’s body for safe wear, while the bag is roomy, so there is space to snuggle. For easy night changes, our bags have a side zip that opens around to the bottom. Dressing is nice and quick. Our baby sleeping bags are available up to size 74 or 80.
If you love coordinated outfits, you can mix and match bodysuits, sleepsuits and sleeping bags in matching colours and prints. Your child will be comfortable and look stylish.
What sleeping bag warmth should we choose?

TOG is the unit used to choose the warmth level of a sleeping bag for a given room temperature.
For 23 degrees, we recommend 0.5 to a maximum of 1.0 TOG. Our 0.5 TOG bags are made from two layers of soft bamboo, so they are comfortable yet lightweight.
What can older children wear for sleep at 23 degrees
They can wear toddler sleeping bags, which come in the same designs and colours as the baby bags, up to size 98. Older ones can also choose pyjamas, up to size 122.
Why is bamboo fibre the best choice

If you have preferred cotton until now, give bamboo a try. We think you will be pleasantly surprised, even if the fabric is new to you.
From a temperature point of view, bamboo fibre’s key advantage is temperature regulation. It warms in winter and cools in summer, which helps balance temperature. Baby is less likely to overheat and less likely to feel cold.
It also absorbs moisture very well, so your baby’s skin does not stay damp and remains less irritated, with good breathability. If your child has skin allergies or eczema, we especially recommend it.
If we give the same care to sleep dressing as we do to daytime outfits, our nights can pass smoothly, and in the morning we will find a smiling little one in the cot.
