What should the baby sleep in?
Dressing your baby raises questions for almost every mother at some point. We feel uncertain when choosing clothes because we know that our baby is sensitive to temperature changes. We are afraid that he will get too hot, sweat, or get cold.
It is also possible that we base our own perception on this: if we are cold, for example, we tend to overdress.
What should I put on him for sleeping? How different is dressing a baby for sleeping compared to dressing an adult? How many layers of clothes should I put on him in the winter? What should he sleep in in the summer in the heat?
There are many questions that every mother can answer more routinely over time. In our article, we share information that will help you choose the optimal sleeping clothes for your baby at any time of day, season, situation, and age.
What does regulating our body temperature actually mean?
One of the most important physiological factors is the regulation of body temperature. Our body produces heat through cellular metabolism and releases heat through evaporation and radiation. We also react to external influences, such as freezing cold outside or heat waves – to name two extreme cases. Control can also come from within in the event of illness, in the form of fever.
Babies' body temperatures can sometimes be higher in the armpit or ear than adults. Their bodies retain more heat, they sweat less, and it is harder to cool them if they have a fever. Their bodies produce more heat because they are more metabolically active and their body surface area is larger compared to their body mass.
What is the normal range of body temperature for a 2-year-old?
It doesn't matter which part of the body we measure:
- In the mouth 35.5-37.5 degrees C
- Rectal temperature 36.6-38 degrees C
- Underarm 34.7-37.3 degrees C
- In the ear 36.4-38 degrees C

What is the thermoregulation of newborns and premature babies?
Newborns' bodies are not yet able to adequately counteract the environmental influences that affect their body temperature. They cannot regulate their own body temperature adequately. Therefore, it is really important to pay due attention, as they can easily catch a cold or get a fever, even regardless of illness. Low body temperature is called hypothermia, and high body temperature is called hyperthermia. To prevent these from developing, we need to dress the baby consciously.
For premature babies, low birth temperature poses a higher health risk. That's why they need an optimal environment, an incubator, after birth, where their body temperature can be regulated.

Body temperature is not constant during the night, and often neither is the room temperature.

The ideal room temperature for a baby to sleep is around 20-22 degrees Celsius.
During sleep, body temperature moves according to a rhythm. This rhythm is not regular until a baby is 3 months old, but then it settles down, similar to that of adults. This means that when falling asleep, the body cools down in the evening hours, then warms up at dawn and in the morning.
In the summer, the temperature of the house changes depending on the weather outside, even daily, and even overnight, the temperature in the evening and in the morning is different. Therefore, just like for ourselves, we need to choose clothing for our baby that can "endure" these temperature changes, and will not cause cold or sweaty hours.

Your baby may be cold or sweaty.
Optimal clothing may mean one more layer of clothing for a colder baby, or one less for a baby who warms up more quickly. Your baby's needs always require individual observation in addition to the recommended clothing methods.
How do you know if your baby is hot while sleeping?
Just like us adults, he may have difficulty falling asleep and may be more alert and restless. His back near the neck may be warm and sweaty, which is often noticeable on his hair because it is damp. Heat rashes may also appear on his skin due to the high temperature and overdressing.
What are the signs that a baby is cold while sleeping?

You can check if your baby is cold by reaching under their clothes at the neck and checking to see if their body is cold. Checking their hands alone does not give you accurate information, it is better to feel their feet. If they are cold, it is more likely that they may need an extra layer of clothing.

Why is it good to put your baby to sleep in a sleeping bag?
Until your baby consciously kicks off his little blanket, but crawls off it while snuggling, it's definitely worth choosing a sleeping bag for him, because that way it will definitely stay on him all night and keep him warm.
Sleeping bags are very comfortable, and babies can move around easily in them. When choosing the right ones, it's worth considering the quality of the material and whether the top edge of the sleeping bag comfortably follows the baby's neck. It shouldn't be tight, but it shouldn't be too open either.
The material and cut of baby clothes are important considerations
When buying clothes for your little one, it's always worth checking the ingredients of the product. The best choice is baby clothes that are made from as natural a material as possible, that are well-ventilated, but still able to retain heat when needed.
It is also important whether the child is comfortable. It is not about following the current trend, but about ensuring that the baby can move properly in his clothes, and that dressing and diapering involve as little torture and twisting of the hands as possible. It should not be too tight, as it hinders his movement, which can lead to frustrations, discomfort, and crying.
What are the benefits of LiaaBébé bamboo baby clothes?
When designing our baby clothes, we prioritized the aspects that cause the most problems and inconveniences for little ones and their parents. We consciously eliminated these in order to ensure the most restful nights and sleep for children.
- LiaaBébé baby clothes made from natural bamboo fiber are more absorbent than cotton and have thermoregulating properties, which means they warm the body in winter and cool it in summer.
- They help eliminate sleep problems. They even out the effects of nighttime temperature changes, preventing sweating or your baby from getting cold. Using our sleeping bags, your child will sleep comfortably warm all night long.
- Dressing up in a way that your child enjoys is a fun experience. Our baby clothes are made of extra stretchy material, so undressing and dressing them can now be a fun event. They allow them to move freely, and they are also pretty, form-fitting pieces.
- Babies outgrow their clothes quickly. If you choose a bodysuit , kicksuit , pants , or jumpsuit that is so flexible that it almost "grows with" them, and is also durable, you'll need to buy clothes much less often.
- We also strive for sustainability. The bamboo plant represents this direction.
What thickness of sleeping bag should you choose?
TOG is a unit of measurement that indicates the thickness of the material from which baby clothes are made. It shows how well the product keeps the body warm. The higher the TOG value, the warmer the sleeping bag or bedding.
Don't base your decision on the season. In all cases, the average temperature of the room is the deciding factor:
- 0.5 TOG 23-25 °C (Summer)
- 1.5 TOG 20-23 °C (Spring, Autumn)
- 2.5 TOG 18-21 °C(Winter)

If we primarily consider the average temperature of the room and choose appropriate products, we can be sure that we have done our best to ensure our baby's undisturbed rest.
If you are unsure, check to see if your child is hot or cold. This may be necessary from time to time, as you may not always know how your child's body will react to changes in humidity, for example.
